Structure and levels

of the telc exams

A comprehensive assessment of your language skills: The telc exams are carefully designed to comprehensively assess your language competence. They consist of several parts: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. Each part aims to test different aspects of your language skills.

Reading comprehension

The reading comprehension section tests your ability to understand written information. This section includes different types of texts, from short messages to complex articles. The difficulty increases with the level, from simple texts in the telc A2 exam to more demanding texts in the telc B2 exam.

Oral expression

The oral part of the exam assesses your ability to express yourself clearly and fluently. In the telc B1 exam, the focus is on everyday communication situations, while the telc B2 exam requires more demanding discussions and presentations.

Listening comprehension

Listening comprehension tests how well you understand spoken language. It includes recordings of dialogs and monologues. While the telc B1 exam tests everyday conversational situations, the telc B2 exam includes more complex listening texts that require a higher level of concentration and comprehension.

Written expression

In the written expression section, you show how well you can articulate your thoughts in written form. This section varies depending on the level: the b1 telc exam tests basic writing skills, while the b2 telc exam includes more complex writing tasks, such as writing reports or essays.

Differences between the telc levels

A1 and A2 Telc exam

for beginners / immigrants

A1: The focus here is on basic everyday situations. Candidates must be able to understand and answer simple questions.

A2: The telc A2 test expands on the basics. The aim is to understand and use common expressions and simple sentences that relate to direct needs or familiar topics.

B1 and B2 Telc exam

for the intermediate level

B1: The Telc B1 exam requires an advanced level of understanding and the ability to communicate in everyday situations, express opinions and talk about experiences.

B2: The Telc B2 exam requires a higher degree of independence. Candidates must be able to understand complex texts, produce detailed texts and express themselves clearly and in detail on a wide range of topics.

C1 and C2 Telc exam

for advanced students and university

C1: This level assesses advanced language skills. Here candidates must understand and produce complex texts, communicate fluently and spontaneously and use the language effectively and flexibly in professional, academic and social contexts.

C2: At the highest level, candidates are expected to understand almost everything they read or hear with ease. They must express themselves spontaneously, very fluently and precisely and recognise subtleties in complex topics.
